Downsells (Offer After a Declined Upsell)
A customer who says no to your upsell isn't always saying no to you. Often the offer is just too big or too expensive for them right now. A downsell gives them a second, lighter option, on its own page, right after they decline. Say your upsell is a 6-session coaching program: a customer who turns it down can then see a single follow-up session, or the same program for less.
How it works
Each upsell can have one downsell, and only customers who decline that upsell see it. Those who accept the upsell never see its downsell. With two upsells, the offers come in this order:
- Upsell 1, followed by its downsell if the customer declines it.
- Upsell 2, whatever the customer chose before, followed by its downsell if they decline it.
- The confirmation page.
Accepting a downsell works just like accepting an upsell: one click, and the amount is charged right away on the card used for the purchase, as a separate payment with its own invoice. It shows up in your Sales with a Downsell badge. A customer can buy the upsell or its downsell, never both in the same order. After a PayPal payment, accepting opens a new PayPal window, as for an upsell.
If the payment doesn't go through (card declined, or bank check not confirmed), a message at the top of the page says so. The customer can click YES, add this to my order again to retry, or move on with No thanks, continue. Their original purchase stays untouched either way.
Setting up a downsell
A downsell always comes after an upsell, so start by setting up the upsell. Like upsells, downsells need the Pro plan.
- Open the product from Products and go to the Additional offers card. Under each upsell that has a product, a + Downsell line appears, followed by "if the upsell is declined".
- Click + Downsell under the upsell of your choice. The list of your products opens.
- Choose the product to offer: the downsell is created right away and unfolds. It can be the same product as the upsell, at a lower price. The list shows your paid products, except the product itself, its order bumps, and the other upsell with its downsell. A subscription works as for an upsell, see Offering a subscription as an upsell.
- Check the Discount. It works as for an upsell: TinyPages fills in half the price, and the offered product always costs at least 1 € (or 1 in your currency) after the discount. The price your customer pays shows on the downsell's line.
- TinyPages creates the downsell page for you. To adapt it, click the pencil icon on the downsell's line (Edit the page), see Customizing the downsell page below.
To stop offering a downsell, unfold it, click Remove the downsell and confirm: the downsell and its page are deleted, and the upsell stays in place. Removing the upsell deletes its downsell too. If the upsell is no longer offered, for example because its discount now reaches its price, its downsell isn't shown either.
Customizing the downsell page
The downsell page starts with a short default text that names the product you offer. You can change it like any other web page: click the pencil icon on the downsell's line in the Additional offers card (Edit the page). You can also open it from the editor of your sales page, where the left sidebar lists it right under its upsell as Downsell. Add any blocks you like, such as text, images or testimonials. The offer itself, with its price and buttons, is added below your content. To show it higher up too, type / in the page and choose Product: the same card appears at that spot, as many times as you like.
Seeing how it performs
Once the product has sales, the downsell's line tells you how often customers take it: "Taken by X buyers of Y". See Product statistics.
Tips for a downsell that works
- Offer a smaller version of the upsell rather than something unrelated: fewer sessions, a shorter program, or the same thing for less.
- Say on the page why this offer costs less. Your customer understands the difference, and the price of your upsell stays credible.
