Test two versions of a page

You wrote a page and you are happy with it. But is the headline the right one? Would a different button label bring more sign-ups? Instead of guessing, you can show half of your visitors one version and the other half a second version, then let the results tell you which one works better. That is A/B testing.

A coach hesitating between "Book your free call" and "Talk to me for free" no longer has to choose blindly. Both go live at the same time, each to half the traffic, and after a while the numbers point to a winner.

Pro feature

A/B testing is part of the Pro plan. On the free plan, clicking A/B in the editor offers you to upgrade. If your Pro subscription ends, any running test stops: version A stays online for everyone, and the results collected so far are kept.

Create a second version

  1. Open the page in the editor.
  2. At the top, next to the page name, click A/B.
  3. TinyPages asks if you want to create a version B. Confirm, and you get a copy of your page to edit freely: change the title, the image, the button, whatever you want to compare. From now on, an A | B switch next to the page name lets you move between the two versions.
  4. Once version B is ready, click Update (or Publish if the page is still a draft). From now on, your visitors are split between the two versions.

Version A is always your original page. Version B is the challenger you are testing against it. Version B can even have its own look, its own colors and fonts, not just different text: open the theme picker while you are on version B and it applies to B alone.

How the split works

Once the test is live, every visitor is sent to one version or the other, about half and half. A given visitor always sees the same version, even if they come back later, so their experience stays consistent.

You keep editing both versions whenever you like. Nothing else changes for your visitors: the page loads just as fast as before.

Read the results

In your Pages tab, a page under test shows a small A/B badge next to its name. Click it to expand the two versions and compare them side by side: how many people saw each one, and its Conversions rate, counted since the test started. Hover the rate to see the detail: sign-ups or sales, and views. A grey dot next to version B means it is not published yet.

Give the test enough time before reading too much into it. A handful of visitors is not enough to trust a difference. Wait until each version has been seen by a meaningful number of people.

Keep the winner

When you have seen enough, expand the page in your Pages tab and open the menu at the end of a version's row:

  • Set as winner: that version becomes the page everyone sees. The other one is deleted, and the test ends.
  • Stop the test: ends the test and keeps version A.

Choosing a winner is final: the losing version is removed. So make your choice once the results are clear.
